Mission
Indian Friendship Centre held their 1st Native Pavilion at the
Abbotsford Agrifair, on the long-week-end in August. Previous
years they were host to the Mission Pow Wow and they have taken
that expertise and organized a Celebration to represent the
survival and adaptation of native culture.
The event draws drummers, singers and dancers featuring West
coast Dance groups, Métis and First Nations entertainment. There
is a large selection of local Art & Craft tables, 50/50 Draws,
Traditional Food and Raffles.
A strict rule of conduct is followed and the sale of eagle
feathers and other ceremonial items is strictly prohibited. Be
sure to spend time speaking to the Arts and Crafts Exhibitors.
They are a wealth of information on where the First Nations
people gather, in their communities. 15 minutes from
downtown Abbotsford. There is ample pay parking and shuttle
service available.
Kwelaxtelatiya
Longhouse Don Froese and Gail Star are the hosts of
this spectacular longhouse Bed and Breakfast, situated at the
base of Mt Cheam on Seabird Island Reserve in Agassiz BC. They
own and operate the Kwelaxtelatiya Longhouse and have been
delivering cross-cultural courses by sharing the spirituality
and customs of the First Nations People. Don is an accomplished
carver and has been educating the judicial systems and tourism
commissions in the separate Sweat Lodge he constructed. Don is
Metis, and Gail is a member of the Seabird Island Band, Stolo
Nation. Don is able to provide Talking Totem Tours visitors with
a Sweat Lodge Ceremony as an add-on to the package. They also
offer cultural performances, oral history, carving
demonstrations, cedar weaving, and authentic native cuisine.
They have recently added "lava rock healing", which is a first
nations healing technique.
Fenn Lodge Gary Bruce and
Diane Brady own and operate this magnificent 6-room lodge in
Harrison Mills Built in 1903. Referred to as "the ultimate
wilderness retreat" (Jan/Feb 1998 issue of The Outdoor Edge),
this bed and breakfast getaway offers 90 riverfront acres with
salmon fishing, eagle watching, woodland trails and Fraser
Valley golfing. You'll discover landscaped and wooded grounds
highlighted by the Chehalis River, a cascading waterfall, and
tranquil meadows. In a meadow next to the house you will find a
Labyrinth: a spiral path used in many spiritual traditions in
various forms around the world for meditation.
Chester Creek Estate
Since 1982 Anne and Mel have arranged many memorable holidays
and are gracious hosts at their Country Bed and Breakfast with
the Dutch Touch. Chester Creek Estate is centrally located, in
the Fraser Valley serving Mission Agassiz and Abbotsford. The
house is situated on 7 lush acres amongst majestic, tall trees.
The main house contains two wood burning fireplaces, and is
professionally decorated featuring a unique collection of
antiques and First Nations Art.
Their guests are invited
to relax on their own private patio or balcony or take a stroll
through their “mini-Stanley Park.”
